How to Add Images to a Blog Post in Ghost

You can write a blog post without images, but it will make your blog post feel tasteless. Just like CMS platforms, Ghost also allows you to add images to a blog post or static page. In ghost, image falls into three types: feature image, regular image, and gallery.

The default ghost installation comes with native integration with Unsplash to allow you to insert images from the Unsplash images library.

Adding a Feature Image

Feature image is the main image of a blog post. It usually lies on the top section of a blog post (the location and placement of feature image are varied, depending on the theme you use). Feature image is also used as a thumbnail on archive pages (tag pages and author pages) and homepage.

To add a feature image in Ghost, you can simply click the Add feature image right above the post title inside the Ghost editor. Or, if you want to insert a feature image from Unsplash, you can click the Unsplash icon to.

Adding a Regular Image

There are three ways to add a regular image (image on the blog post content). First, you can upload an image from your local computer. Second, you can embed an image from a third-party source. Third, you can insert an image from Unsplash.

1. Uploading Image from Local Computer

If you want to upload an image from your local computer, click the plus button on the Ghost editor and select Image. This will open the dialog window where you can select an image from your local computer.

2. Embedding Image from a Third-Party Source

If you want to embed an image from a third-party source to a blog post, you can type /image[space]image URL and hit enter.

3. Inserting Image from Unsplash

To insert an image from Unsplash, you can click the plus icon on the Ghost editor and select Unsplash. This will open the image library window where you can search for an image you want to insert.

Search for the image you want to insert. Once you find one, you can select (click) it. Click the Insert image button to insert the image.

You can also open the Unsplash image library window by typing /unsplash[space]image keyboard on the Ghost editor. Hit enter after typing the keyboard.

A little note, if you insert an image from Unsplash, your image is hotlinked to Unsplash. In other words, the image is not on your website technically. If you don’t need the Unsplash integration, you can disable the Unsplash in your Ghost blog.

Adding Image Gallery

To add an image gallery in Ghost, you can click the plus button on the Ghost editor and select Gallery.

Click the image selector on the Ghost editor and select the images you want to include to the gallery. Ghost allows you to add a maximum of 9 images to a gallery.

The Bottom Line

Adding images to a blog post is not mandatory, but images can help make your blog post feel more alive. Also, an image can strengthen the message you want to convey. Ghost has native integration with Unsplash to allow you to insert images from the Unsplash library. Of course, you can also use your own images — which is a better option if you want the image to be stored on your website. In addition to regular images, you can also add an image gallery to a blog post, which is great if you have a photography blog.
