How to Remove “Powered by Ghost” Text on the Ghost Footer

Ghost comes with 13 default themes. If you use one of these default Ghost themes, you will have a “powered by Ghost” text on the footer of your website. If you have a company name to run your business, you might want to remove the text and replace it with something like “Managed by Your Company Name”. Or maybe you just want to remove the text without any replacement as you don’t want to disclose the software you use to build your website.

Ghost offers no option to remove the “Powered by Ghost” text on the footer. The only way to remove the text is by editing the theme file associated with the text. The location of the text itself is different on each theme. In the Casper theme, for instance, the text is located on the default.hbs file.

How to Remove “Powered by Ghost” Text on the Ghost Footer

In this post, we will show you how to remove the “Powered by Ghost” text on two different themes: Casper and Alto.

Please note that if your website is hosted on Ghost.org, you can only edit a theme file if you use the Creator plan or higher. The Starter plan doesn’t include the ability to edit the theme files feature.

Removing “Powered by Ghost” Text on the Casper Theme

First off, login to your Ghost dashboard (yourwebsite.com/ghost). Once logged in, click the gear icon to open the settings screen. On the settings screen, click the Design menu.

On the Site design screen, click Change theme on the bottom-left corner to open the theme collections. Next, click the Advanced button to see the list of the installed themes. Click the three-line icon on the active theme and select Download.

Once the theme is downloaded (in a ZIP file), unzip the ZIP file and find the file named default.hbs. Open the file with your favorite text editor (e.g., Visual Studio Code) and find the line that contains “Powered by Ghost” text. You can remove the line or replace the text if you want it.

Make sure to save the change.

Once done editing the default.hbs file, re-zip the files of the Casper theme. Return to the Ghost dashboard and click the Upload button and upload the ZIP file of the Casper file (make sure to select the ZIP file in which the default.hbs file has been edited).

Removing “Powered by Ghost” Text on the Alto Theme

On some Ghost themes, including Alto, the “Powered by Ghost” text is located on the footer.hbs file. On the Alto theme itself, you can find the footer.hbs file under the partials directory.

Login to your Ghost dashboard to download the ZIP file of the Alto theme (as we have covered earlier above). Unzip the file and find the footer.hbs file under the partials directory. Edit the file using your favorite editor and find the line that contains the “Powered by Ghost” text. Remove the line if you want to remove the “Powered by Ghost” from your site footer. Or, you can replace the text with your own text.

Re-zip the Alto theme files once you are done editing the footer.hbs file. Switch back to the Ghost dashboard and upload the re-zipped file.
